Following Principle Of Pain from 2018, Fotocrime return with their second full length, another personal work for R., the project's vocalist and mastermind, that uses the help of a series of notable guest contributors.
"This is a record for late night drives, a soundtrack for headlights illuminating the horizon," R. reveals about the new album. "I’ll make music until the end of my days, with or without a listener, but I’m happy to have a passenger for the ride into the dark."
South of Heaven features the skills of J. Robbins (Jawbox) who co-produced the album alongside R., from sessions recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Simon Small in London, and Robbins in Baltimore.
First single, Love Is A Devil, comes with a very creative visual directed and edited by Joe Watson. It's a well structured, dark piece that follows the traditional gothic rock and post punk tropes, while surfacing as something very fresh, electric and forceful.
"Love Is A Devil was lyrically inspired by Francis Bacon, George Dyer, and John Maybury’s similarly titled film," R. reveals. "The song features my dear friend and San Diego punk icon Rob Moran on bass guitar."
R. expresses more of his thoughts on South of Heaven: "It’s been a journey of persistence and obsession, more character actor than leading man. South of Heaven is deeply personal, an honest fiction, an exposed nerve pulsing in a blanket of fog."
South of Heaven comes out on March 13, 2020, via Profound Lore.
