Justine Never Knew the Rules, a Brazilian shoegaze quartet who make their love for Smashing Pumpkins' 1979 evident with their name, are composed of Mauricio Barros, Bruno Fontes, Marcel Marques and Gabriel Wiltemburg. Since their formation in 2013 the band has produced an EP in and their debut album, Overseas, and now they return after a five-year hiatus, with a new single, Avalanche, which also happens to be their first song with lyrics in Portuguese.
The band's new release comes with an equally atmospheric black and white video. In the visual Avalanche is accompanied by the short track Lo Siento, which brings everything to a moody closing.
Avalanche and Lo Siento were recorded between February and December 2021 in the band's own studio, Deaf Haus, in collaboration with their Sorocaba mates, Wry.
Out through Midsummer Madness, the new offering by Justine Never Knew the Rules flirts with the heavier side of dreampop, remaining absolutely expressive and atmospheric thanks to its post rock overtones.
