If you are under the impression that southern rock and punk are not a good match, pause for a while and think again, firstly of how graciously those two have been merging over and over again throughout history, and also because of this nice opportunity provided by Philadelphia's Residuels. The band is releasing a fine tribute to the late great Gregg Allman through their song, You'll Cry, a piece evocative of the influence the Allman Brothers had on their own group, and ultimately everyone regardless of genre and style.
Justin Pittney, guitarist and vocalist for Residuels reveals: "Long before I got into punk - I started playing guitar.
With no internet and not a lot of access to TV, I turned to my parents record collection. They had a ton of great stuff (including the original press of the first Stooges record!) but with my new found obsession I was drawn most to the guitar-heavy stuff. It wasn't before long that I made my way to the Allman Brothers.
It was Duane's playing that initially drew me in. But a guitar solo is only has good as the song it's played on... and Gregg's wrote some of the best songs of all time.
We'd recorded You'll Cry a few months back during the sessions for our LP. It's a sort of self-indulgent (for me) song inspired by the 70's 'Southern Rock’ sound that the Allman Brothers basically invented.
We really had no plans in releasing it - but with Gregg's passing I wanted to get it out there as sort of personal tribute to him and how wide an influence his music had on the world."
Residuels have previously caught the attention of Iggy Pop through their cover on a Stooges classic, and have shared the stage with The Buzzcocks, supporting them on two US/CA tours, and also bands like Allah Las, Destruction Unit, The Spits, Black Lips, The Stranglers, Thee Oh Sees, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Sonics and more, and will be on tour through July and August with Coathangers.
