Apart from his undeniable skills as a director, filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn has found another way to showcase his excellent taste, through the curated Nicolas Winding Refn Presents series of vinyl releases, out via Milan Records, and which has previously included reissues of classic scores like Brad Fiedel's The Terminator and Basil Poledouris' Robocop, as well as contemporary ones, such as It Follows by Disasterpiece.
Refn has noticed the work of Margaret Doll Rod since her time as a member of Demolition Doll Rods. Margaret's latest musical incarnation in the Detroit-based glam rocking punks, Heartthrob Chassis, will be shortly coming up with Arrhythmia, their forthcoming LP and latest entry in the NWR Presents series.
Envision The Stooges, New York Dolls, Destroy All Monsters and Patti Smith all mixed up in a blender and served raw. Check You Out is an American punk rock classic, as bold, spirited and direct as punk rock gets, and it does not need any more than its two-minute brevity to win you over.
"The songs just come, I don’t feel like I even write them," Margaret describes. "You know how an amplifier will pick up a radio station? I’m like that...to be certified for sharing, a song has gotta go through certain checkpoints inside my soul. There’s these basic instincts we have and my music is from there. It’s very primitive and very raw."
