Dutch composer Rutger Zuydervelt is Machinefabriek, and his upcoming album, With Voices, is composed of eight brilliant collaborative tracks with adroit vocalists, including Terence Hannum of Locrian, Peter Broderick and more, and showcases the artist's excellent, cunning use of cassette recorders, tone generators, radios, synths and other oddities.
Album highlight and closer, the utterly entrancing and simply titled VIII features Marissa Nadler's hypnotic vocal, prominently and true to the album's concept like an abstract instrument that compliments the composer's minimal arrangement. It's an 11-minute epic, a grand piece of alluring electronica that relies on the vocal's strength, but dares to use it in the most avant-garde way possible, shining a light on its powers and abilities, and shaping it into something unexpected and charmingly peculiar.
From the vast catalog of Machinefabriek's body of work, this upcoming record can be a sound starting point for those who haven't indulged in his exquisite experimental electronica yet. There's a lot to explore, and much to discover.
With Voices comes out January 18th, 2019 on Western Vinyl.
