Contemporary punks, Freak Dream, come from Vancouver, Canada, founded on the creative force of Elliot Langford (SSRIs, The Rebel Spell), alongside Ryan Gambles on drums (Dirty Spells, The New Values). The band released their debut album, Into The Sun, through the Toronto-based label, Artoffact, last September, supported by tours of both Canada and the USA.
Freak Dream offer their own, hard-wired rendition of synthpunk and cyberpunk, making excellent use of live as well as electronic instrumentation, fleshing out both the post punk and the electronica aspects of their art. Genre-bending and arresting, Freak Dream's sound is certainly not easy to identify but it doesn't need much effort to engage with.
Awash with crashing fervency, disarming album cut, Don't Wanna Be That, opposes the patriarchy and toxic masculinity, and presents the duo's astoundingly raveled musicianship in all its glory. The song comes with a video composed of fantastic illustrations and animations, created by Renton Brand, strongly redolent of the aesthetics of Terry Gilliam and Monty Python.
