Young Guv: Try Not To Hang On So Hard

From the ranks of the acclaimed Canadian hardcore punks, Fucked Up, guitarist Ben Cook, also known as Young Guv, is releasing two new albums this year, both on Run For Cover Records. GUV I came out last August, while GUV II releases October 25th, 2019.

Cook reveals that new single, Try Not To Hang On So Hard, was written "on a bit of acid. I was house-sitting for my mom and looking at all the photos and all the very British trinkets she keeps around and on her walls that make her happy. It had a pretty profound emotional effect on me, probably due to the LSD, so I wrote a song about how it's ok to feel a little lost or lonely and to keep things around you that make you feel comforted."

Having already proven the significance of his artistry through hardcore bands like No Warning and Fucked Up, Cooke takes a crack at shimmering indie rock in the vein of Guided By Voices, Teenage Fanclub and Pavement, and challenges himself on a different level.

"To me Young Guv songs are like people-watching in a foreign country in the morning," he says. "I'm there and I'm trying not to cry from the overwhelming feeling of sadness and happiness."
