The creative process of Desyre, the sophomore album by Los Angeles/Brooklyn based vocalist, composer, and recording artist, Sondra Sun-Odeon, goes as far back as 2013 when the first recordings were made, but the project was soon halted due to the deterioration of the artist's mental health and more hardship which stood in the way. Fortunately Desyre is now ready and scheduled to be released on November 22nd, 2019 via Graveface Records.
The album's title track is themed on sexual pleasure as a passage to awareness and wisdom, and it comes with well crafted accompanying video directed by James Autery.
"'Desyre is a song celebrating the divine feminine creative force, shakti," Sun-Odeon reveals. "It’s about allowing surrender to sensual pleasure as a gateway to spiritual awakening and God(dess). The video features professional dominatrix, Dia Dynasty, as God(dess) and was shot in upstate NY by filmmaker and artist James Autery. The video explores craving for union with something greater than our individual selves and celebrates pleasure as being wholly aligned with and at one with Nature. We know that patriarchy is anti-pleasure, so embracing and reclaiming pleasure--especially sexual and especially as womxn--is a pathway to liberation personally, politically, spiritually."
As the album enlists the skills and vision of many notable collaborators such as Thor Harris of Swans, J.R. Bohannon of Ancient Ocean, Lia Simone Braswell of A Place to Bury Strangers and co-producer Alex De Groot (Zola Jesus), it also makes excellent use of its inspiration by a series of different genres, like tastes of Sabbath-esque doom rock, airy shoegaze and post rock, and avant-garde practices..
