New Jersey's Pale Shade join forces with their fellow shoegazers, No Sun, for a split seven-inch which evidently showcases both bands' love for nineties indie rock through a pair of heartfelt and very well executed covers. No Sun offer their take on Heading for the Door by Duster, while Pale Shade rework Speed Trials by Elliott Smith, originally on 1997's Either/Or.
Quite close to the fragility of the original, Pale Shade's take doesn't reinvent the song at its core, but it enhances the delicacy in Smith's frank songwriting style, and goes through a grittier lens to come out the other end equally effectual, with the extra layers of reverb and fuzz being a very convincing additional elements.
Pale Shade are Josh O’Hara (vocals, guitar), Evan Lynch (bass), and Joe McLaughlin (drums).
No Sun / Pale Shade Split 7in. is out through Flesh and Bone Records.
