Meanjin/Brisbane band syrup, go on shorten their name to SGO and mark that change with the release of a new single which slants toward the darker edges of shoegaze and dreampop. Kris Briese and Liz Dick, members of the band, created the new song over a few months in 2021, relying on a coincidentally common bond of breaking relationships.
A deeply sentimental song which examines themes of sadness, loss, and separation, Bookcase embraces the contrast of emotions such as independence and relief against frustration and remorse, and everything that derives from the end of a relationship. Musically, the new single communicates a mood of timeless shoegaze with a touch of a more contemporary tone.
