Acclaimed, award winning composer Deru aka Benjamin Wynn has a new album ready to be out on October 28th, 2022 through Friends of Friends. We Will Live On carries a very interesting concept, and is introduced with the rather immersive The Way Through the Forest which showcases the whole record's intent.
Deru worked on his new material on a Yamaha Disklavier, an acoustic piano outfitted with solenoids which enable it to be digitally controlled, in this case by Wynn's custom software. The new album was recorded in an abandoned missile silo in Los Angeles.
As a result, the piano seemed to be playing itself; technology which did appear to be integrated with humanity. These patterns are not metric, as most western music is, because they are based on geometries rather than equal divisions of a measure. Consequently, the patterns have structure and groove but sound fairly unique.
Using an organic background of textures and impalpable atmospheric noises, The Way Through the Forest is a piece founded on repeating piano phrases as it loads with data and makes for a distinguishable listen.
