Mute Swan, from Tucson, Arizona, come forth with a sound which is centered on psychedelic rock base and cleverly blends elements of early nineties shoegaze and dreampop. The band is continuing to rise with their first releases, with a focus on guitar effects, soft and melodious vocals, and dominant rhythms.
Phantasms of the Living, which features a backing vocal performance by Sonoda, marks the band's return after the release of their 2021 full length Only Ever, and is the first in a series of singles featuring friends and similar artists.
The new song is a shoegaze-rooted, existential psych rock number written in a place overlooking the Tucson valley during lockdown. "The song's lyrics contemplate the ephemeral nature of being 'someone', as the ego, memories, and the future amount to mere thoughts," Mute Swan reveal.
