Vince Clarke has been associated with a whole lot of brilliant music in his long career, but has never released an album under his own flag so far. The co-founder of Erasure and Depeche Mode will unveil his debut solo album, Songs of Silence, on November 17th, 2023 via Mute.
The album's first reveal, The Lamentations of Jeremiah, comes with a beautifully stark video directed by Ebru Yildiz.
During the lockdown period, Clarke went on this creative project as a form of distraction, and his approach to making the album involved adhering to two distinct rules; he exclusively used sounds generated from Eurorack equipment, and each song revolves around a single note, maintaining a consistent key throughout. Songs of Silence was recorded at his home studio in New York
“I could have gone on forever, I could have not stopped,” Clarke comments, describing the use of Eurorack.
“I was enjoying the process so much and wasn’t thinking about anyone else hearing it. But hearing it develop in my studio, in my head, learning new tricks – that’s been the best thing about this. I was in a state of shock, actually, when Mute said they wanted to release this album.”
