Darkness serves as the dark and brooding centerpiece of Oakland project Field of Fear's fourth release, Beyond the Reach of Light. The new album represents a deeply personal journey for the band, going very deep into the intricate nuances of depression.
Darkness is an experimental composition characterized by its forceful industrial elements, and its overall hard hitting sound. Drone, power electronics, and industrial music collide to form a distinctive blend.
Beyond the Reach of Light belongs to a category of albums which draw its emotional inspiration from a very personal space. The resulting sounds are a mix of heavily processed synthesizers, guitars, and samples, all taken to their limits.
Field of Fear's Drew Zercoe, through field recordings in the Oakland area, has incorporated an element of place-specific synchronicity into the record. It is a practice which acknowledges the physical conditions that often exacerbate underlying mental health issues.
