Recorded by Pat Collier, mixed by Mark Russell and mastered by Simon Scott (Slowdive), Finding Gravity is the new single by Brighton-based shoegazers Air Formation who are set to follow the excellent Near Miss from 2018 with a new, self-titled album, the band's sixth in total.
For this one, the band cites inspiration from favorites such as Bardo Pond and Mogwai among others. In the end, the album is shaped by the collective influence of preceding Air Formation music. "How can we do something a bit different, but it still be Air Formation," says guitarist and vocalist Matt Bartram.
"Time goes fast," Bartram comments. "We're still figuring it all out. But most importantly, I think Air Formation still feels totally relevant. All the time we enjoy doing it we will keep at it."
Navigating the borders of post rock and shoegaze, Finding Gravity appears to be continuing the trajectory established by the band in their previous album, and exudes an utterly enchanting and hypnotic magnetism from beginning to end.
