Broken Bones is the third studio album by seasoned post punk / alternative rock band, Lautmusik. Released through a collaboration with midsummer madness, the new album arrives nearly a decade after their previous release, Juniper. Lautmusik's current lineup includes Alessandra Lehmen (vocals, synths), Murilo Biff (guitar), Guilherme Nunes (bass), and Pedro Rheinheimer (drums). Formed in Porto Alegre in 2006, Lautmusik first emerged with Lost in the Tropics in 2011.
Broken Bones features eleven tracks and marks Lautmusik's first album as a quartet, with a single guitarist in the lineup.
“All of our albums took a long time. We like to do things slowly, with careful production,” says Alessandra. “We make music to please ourselves first. We don’t feel pressure or anxiety to release anything. For most of Laut’s existence, we have had some geographical limitations. Today, Nunes lives in SP and Murilo in SC, but we all have a lot of desire and willingness to make things work, and with a little organization and planning, we always manage to do it.”
In 2020, the pandemic naturally slowed down the recording process. During this time, the band also faced the devastating loss of their friend Cássio. “He was already away and living in Rio de Janeiro, but we were still very good friends. Even today, I have trouble processing the fact that he is no longer in this world. The album is dedicated to him,” recalls Alessandra. “ When he left the band, some of the new songs were just beginning to come together. Cássio even rehearsed Faint of Heart, for example. When he left, we spent some time thinking about whether it was worth inviting someone to join the band or not. But Cássio himself gave Murilo the pedal he used the most. Then the pandemic hit and we found out that he had passed away in Rio… It was really hard, but we didn’t think about stopping. The prospect of going back to recording helped me a lot to keep from going crazy during the quarantine,” says Nunes.
The band's vibrant approach to creating manifests itself in the album's title track, which also conveys an intense sense of vulnerability and an appeal for help and recovery through the lyrics and delivery. Lautmusik's new material propels the group forward by expressing a desire to recuperate from both visible wounds and indistinguishable challenges.
