Cold in Berlin: Dream One

Formed in London in 2010, dark band Cold in Berlin continues to delve into the depths of heavy guitar-based underground music, having joined the ranks of New Heavy Sounds. The band is unveiling their multi-part project, Wounds, which includes the EP, The Body is the Wound, released in early 2024, and a full album set to follow later in the year.

Wounds serves as a guide to the Cold in Berlin's evolving sound, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

Vocalist Maya explains: “Wounds started as an idea about bringing together stories of loss and the idea that wounds can be growth, healing and that slow burn you use to fuel other fires.

For their new project, the band draws inspiration from krautrock, post punk, and doom, among other styles. Lead single, Dream One, exhibits their signature dark sound, layered with a subtle industrial edge. The track features their doom-laden gothic rock at its most formidable, with haunting lyrics and a unique heaviness which feels both imaginative and rare. Siren-like vocals intensify the song’s eerie weight, pushing it into nightmarish realms.

The new EP marks the band's first new release since their well received 2019 album, Rituals of Surrender. The lyrical themes address subjects such as sex, murder, suicide, and broken dreams, and are woven into an open narrative which allows listeners to interpret and connect with the songs on a personal level.

I wanted to loosely tie the lyrics around two ideas,” explains Maya. “Psychology, which tells us the body houses the trauma we experience and carry with us – and Buddhism, which suggests there is no growth unless from pain; we choose to hold on to suffering even though we can learn not to, and so we continue in disillusionment – aware but not aware.
