Soft Set: Gone

Gone is the newest single and video from rising Canadian dreampop act, Soft Set, which has made a strong impression in recent times with their 2020 EP Love and Dancing, and their debut album Still Life from 2022. The duo composed of James Gray and Nathan Athay returns with the title track off a forthcoming EP which is promised to unveil a new musical direction for the band.

Nathan unfolds: “The one thing that really surprised us while making the Gone EP was how much lighter and more hopeful it ended up being. It started off really dark during the demo phase, but once we began layering in harmonies, it took on a more uplifting vibe, which we weren’t expecting. It was a nice surprise for us, and it made the entire process more interesting, for sure!

The band whose sound is primarily recognized for its reflective character and more evocative and moody approach, this time adopts a more upbeat style.

After an unexpected postponement on the day of filming, the Toronto-shot Gone video almost did not make it. The band's quick spontaneity and the assistance of a stranger enabled them to finish the task of shooting.

Athay continues to explain: "When we first planned the video for 'Gone', we had invited a friend to be in it, but they didn’t show up on the day of the shoot. I ended up walking into The Local pub on Roncesvalles, where I met Alandra McKirdy and explained the situation. Alandra graciously accepted our last-minute invitation to step in, and we are incredibly thankful for her involvement. Without her, the video might not have come together the way it did."

Gone, the EP, comes out on November 15th, 2024.
