Twenty Seven by Spanaway showcases a different side of the band's creativity, exploring new directions in sound and style. The track highlights their versatility, offering a fresh perspective on their musical range.
Zack Van Why (vocals, guitar) comments: "'Twenty Seven' is suffering through loss in rapid succession. Being the only one in the room for the first time. What that looks like, the reality of it. I was 27 years old when it was written."
Robby Vena (guitar) adds: "I’ve always understood 'Twenty Seven' as an exploration of loneliness as this 'meditative purgatory' through the eyes of my best friend. It’s that burning in your stomach as the breeze meanders through the nothingness."
Offering more detail on the song's creation, Vena continues: "The coolest part of 'Twenty Seven' is that it grew into this big ensemble piece. The guest vocalist is our friend Brie Emsee. We were introduced to her by our drummer Keith as they were coworkers in the restaurant biz. She’s a really prolific solo artist and we all admire her talent. In addition to that, piano on that track was performed by a childhood friend named Tyler Lyons. Trumpet and trombone were performed by Matt Hull whom we met through Zach Weeks. We wanted to take that 'Converge on Axe To Fall' approach and put as many friends on as we could."
Spanaway, formerly known as Blush, is set to release Songs of Yesteryear, their first album under the new name. The anticipated album was recorded and engineered by Zach Weeks at the renowned God City studio and mastered by Magnus Lindberg of Cult of Luna. It will be available on December 6th, 2024 through Burial Whisper Records.
