Returning with her identifiable sound made up of vintage synths and drum machines, Brooklyn-based EBM/post punk artist Rare DM aka Erin Hoagg unveils The Ring; a synth noir odyssey which explores the chaos that arises from attempting to fix something that was better left alone.
Amidst a case of pneumonia and the cruel Michigan winter, Rare DM directed and edited the track’s accompanying video herself, drawing inspiration from Radiohead's Karma Police, Mulholland Drive, and The Blair Witch Project.
“In the video I am the driver, doing the chasing, being chased, in the passenger seat, and getting lost in the woods. It's confusing, just as the situation behind the song was. It's not some resolved buttoned up thing — not a friend you cut off or a lover you stopped seeing. Something cloudy and more sinister,” the artist explains.
“The Ring is a journey into the chaos you created by trying to make things better,” Hoagg comments on the song. “It is about a misunderstanding - did you make it worse by addressing it in the first place? You tried to fix it and now it's even more messed up. Who is the real enemy now? Did you ‘fuck around and find out’?”
