In Covert: Nowhere to Turn

What began as a solitary bedroom recording during the haze of early lockdowns has evolved into something far more forceful and full-bodied. Nowhere to Turn, the latest offering from guitarist and composer Wes Lopez's project In Covert feels like psychic overload.

Initially tracked to cassette in the throes of personal and economic collapse, the song draws from a volatile well of black metal, goth rock, and experimental ambient noise. It’s heavy and brooding, with a central eruption of layered synths and guttural vocal drones punching through the gloom and despair spilling over.

Rebuilt from the ground up in 2023 with producer Chris King (Cold Showers, Kai Tak), the track took on new life. With drummer Oscar Ruvalcaba injecting fresh urgency, and Lopez handling guitar, bass, and synth duties, the project transformed from solo expression to collaborative power. Miguel (Kontrol) brought early synth textures to life, and vocalist Kris Balocca took things further, giving voice to the track's emotional standstill with an unvarnished performance.
